Walk Speakers Announced
This week, LRF announced its lineup of speakers for the September 8 Walk. Josh Levin, President of LympheDIVAs, and Cynthia Shechter, Occupational Therapist and owner of ShechterCare, will each deliver a brief address just before the Walk kicks off. We thank them both for their commitment to lymphatic research and to LRF. We look forward to hearing them speak and to sharing a wonderful day of fundraising and community-building with them. For more information on the Walk and to set up your team or to join an existing team, please visit LymphWalk.org.
The Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center is conducting a two-year pilot study of a microsurgery technique coupled with imaging technology that seeks to prevent lymphedema, and to potentially detect and treat it early. A team of researchers at Vanderbilt University, including Jens Titze, M.D., have identified a new cast of cells and molecules that function in the skin to control sodium balance and blood pressure. In a series of studies, the researchers discovered that the body stores sodium in the skin and that immune system cells and lymph capillaries (vessels of the lymphatic system) regulate sodium balance and blood pressure. Two October conferences on lymphedema are now accepting registrations. The 16th Annual State of Georgia Lymphedema Education and Awareness Conference takes place on October 12 at the Marcus Nanotechnology Research Center at Georgia Tech. The Acadia Lymphedema Conference will be held in Bar Harbor, Maine, on October 25 and 26. More information about both conferences can be found in the events section of the LRF Facebook page.
Two fundraising events are continuing to impress us with their momentum. The Cerini Challenge, a group of dedicated LRF supporters led by board member Ken Cerini, undertook a series of challenging climbs this summer — and raised nearly $6,000. Check out their Friends and Events page more information.
LRF board member and member of Team LRF, Doron Ilan, has already raised two-thirds of his $10,000 fundraising goal for the NYC Marathon in November. Check out Doron’s Crowdrise page for more information.
Last week, we announced that LRF was approaching the wonderful milestone of 1,000 fans on Facebook. Today, we’re at 1,032. Our Twitter and YouTube pages also add followers nearly every day. The word is getting out about LRF and lymphatic research — and we thank you!
